barangga: First Nations Design
barangga is an ongoing community engagement program that celebrates design and making practices as a vital form of cultural knowledge in First Nations communities across Australia. The yarning series brings together designers revitalising cultural practices and preserving material culture and highlights the importance of Community consultation and intergenerational knowledge exchange.
The project’s title comes from the Dharawal word barangga meaning ‘large vessel’ or ‘island’. Led by multidisciplinary creative Nicole Monks and curated by Morgan Marlow, this event focuses on designing for public space. It considers how precious, crafted belongings transition to large-scale public monuments, and the complexities of connecting with Country on someone else's Country.
