Button Reimagined, Newtown Jewellers Collective

From a simple fastener to a coveted item beset with rules and regulations, the button played an integral part in the social and industrial history of Western society. Originally a men’s object, buttons became an obsession for rulers of European empires, created by skilled craftsmen using precious metals and gemstones. The industrialisation of manufacturing lead to the eventual perception that buttons were common objects of little consequence.

Author and jeweller Lucy Godoroja challenges this perception by bringing together a group of makers. Using materials synonymous with each maker, the Newtown Jewellers Collective reimagines the button in all its glory.

Featured Artists: Lucy Godoroja, Kaoru Rogers, Linda Blair, and others.
